Why Do You Write?

A lot of people ask this question when you tell them that, well, you write. Why do you write, they ask. And I wonder what exactly they want to hear. Because, I know that it’s a matter of time before they start asking follow up questions, like, “When do you write?”, “How do you write?”, “What has it done for you?”, “What role does writing play in your life?”, and so on.

My answer is pretty simple. I write because I love to. I love to put my words onto paper, and the feeling that comes with it. Especially the fact and feeling that somebody, somewhere is reading you. You know, interested in what you have to say. Waiting for an update. It’s a good feeling.

You know what, I don’t say that writing is easy, as many assume. It’s one of the most annoying, time consuming, irritating and troubling thing ever. Yet, it’s addicting. You see, an easy read is a damn hard write. But still, it’s all worthwhile when you put your heart into it. And the reason that I write is because I love that agony.

As you all know that I’m in the middle of writing a novel, “Let it Fall”. So, if one asks me why I write fiction, I’d say, because it gets me to express my feelings better. I can tell the world what I feel about something in a way that will impact their lives and it wouldn’t seem to be a sermon, either. Because, in the end, it’s not about what you did, it’s about what you learned from it.

Right?

When asked about blogging, I say, it’s good to be heard. The feeling that it gives when you know that you write something, and there are people out there who would love to read you. It doesn’t really matter how big of an audience you have. It’s the realization that one person, just that one person, who could be doing anything at the moment, is interested in reading what you have to say.

And the community. It’s such a beautiful community of writers and readers, the love they provide–it’s all addicting. The well-wishes, the support, everything. People you get to meet.

So, my question in answer to this is, “How can you not write?”
